Alcohol, Tobacco, Narcotics
   
 

Smoking is prohibited in public places (museums, monuments, cinemas…) or on public transport. Restaurants are divided into smoking and non-smoking areas.

Any driver under the influence of alcohol seriously compromises the safety of passengers and other road users.
As a result, driving with a level of alcohol in the blood equal to or higher than 0.5g per litre of blood is prohibited.

The police and gendarmerie can test blood for alcohol.

It is prohibited to travel (even on foot) under the influence of alcohol along a public highway.

Anyone who allows a minor to drink until they are in a state of drunkenness is committing a crime.

It is prohibited to sell or offer alcoholic drinks to minors aged under 16 years old (in drinks outlets, shops and public places).

According to the law of 10 January 1991 it is prohibited to introduce alcoholic drinks into establishments for physical and sporting activities.

The use of drugs and bringing them into France is strictly forbidden, including "soft" drugs.

The police, understanding the French legal system

In case of attack or theft, you can report it to:

- The nearest police station or gendarmerie to where the attack was carried out

- The state prosecutor's department of a higher level court [for cases of a serious nature] where the attack was carried out, or of the place of residence of the person who carried out the attack if they can be identified.

In case of dispute with a hotel, restaurant, retailer… you must contact the Direction Départementale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes [departmental consumer rights organization] of the Department where the incident occurred.

You can always keep in contact with the authorities of your country through your embassy or consulate in France.

In the event of a crime committed by yourself

If you commit an offence you are liable to various sentences in the same way as a French citizen, whether a driving offence, travelling without a ticket on public transport, for being under the influence of alcohol on a public highway or for brawling in a café.

Report the matter to the local police station, they will give you a receipt, then contact your consulate.

- your keys, or a personal item

Ask at the police station for the number of the Lost & Found Office (in Paris 33 (0) 1 55 76 20 00).

The RATP [Paris public transport authority] and the SNCF [French National Railways] have their own department.

- your car

Your report will be recorded at the police station or you will be directed to the car pound, if your car has been illegally parked and removed by the police…

- your credit card

Have a stop put on the card as soon as possible, then report the loss to the police.
