    Hotels in France

If you're looking for a hotel in France, you have many choices. The hotels generally occupied by tourists are examined and approved by the authorities. The facilities, services, and areas for the specific hotel determine whether it's classified as a 1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star, or 4-star Luxury. There are approximately 17,500 hotels, motels, inns, and lodging options in France. Hotel prices are unregulated and items like breakfast or an extra bed will likely be in addition to the posted price for a room.

    Finding A Room

It's easiest to reserve your lodging through a travel agent prior to your trip to France. Contacting local Tourist Offices or the Syndicats d'Initiative is also an option, they can inform you on local lodging choices.

    Hotel Chains

Whether you're looking for an economical hotel and room rate or want to experience the unique France hotels and inns, there are many options for finding your perfect room.

If rates are being quoted on a per-person basis, they include room and board. If rates are quoted per night it is usually for a single or double room. Taxes and services are included in your hotel price.

Planning your lodging ahead of time is important. You should receive confirmation of your reservation prior to your trip. An advance deposit is sent at the time of reservation. Reservations should never be made orally, it's safest to get all details in writing.

Generally, deposits are 25% of the cost for your reserved time or the equivalent of one night's stay. Exact amounts vary by location and hotel. Deposits are not refunded unless a contract specifically states such.

    Arrival Time

Expected guest arrival is between 7 and 10pm. If you see your travel plans allow you to be early or will cause you to be later than that timeframe, it's best to let the hotel know when you expect to arrive. If you reserve a hotel room without deposit, which is not recommended, they are not required to hold the room for you after 7pm.

When setting up a reservation, be sure to familiarize yourself with that particular hotel's cancellation policy. Many hotels honor the stipulations of the International Hotel Convention, and Article 1590 of the French Civil Code regulates the rights of hotel guests regarding cancellation.

    ON-THE-SPOT Reservations

If you wish to wait until you arrive in France for hotel reservations, you can consult the Automatic Central Reservations Board in Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport. You can also consult Tourist Offices or Syndicats d'Initiative in Paris or other French cities.

    At A Campsite

There are more than 9,000 fully equipped and 2,300 farm campsites in France. Off-site camping is permitted with landowner authorization, but is prohibited on roadsides and beaches, or at designated sites. You can contact Tourist Offices or the Gendarmerie for more information on camping, call the Federation Francaise de Camping-Caravaning (tel +33 0 1 42 72 84 08), or browse The Official Campsite Guide.
